We work with free software and release our own. Not as a fashion: because it is how the work gets better, and because what we build for you should stay yours.
Why we share
You get better by seeing how other people work. Everything we know how to do we learned partly by reading someone else’s code, and keeping ours to ourselves would be an odd way to say thank you. When a tool of ours is public, someone runs it on infrastructure we have never seen, hits a case we never thought of, and tells us. That kind of feedback cannot be bought.
cv4
The prefix we sign our releases with: cv for Corsinvest, 4 for “for”. cv4pve is the tooling for Proxmox VE, cv4ceph for Ceph, cv4net for development. It all starts in the same place — a problem we actually had, solved once and then left out in the open.
What it means in practice
No closed boxes
On the platforms we use — Proxmox VE, Ceph, Linux — you can check what they do, ask anyone, and you are not exposed to one vendor’s commercial decisions.
Whoever writes it, maintains it
We run our own tools on client clusters every day. They stay current because we need them first, not because a release schedule says so.
We give back what we use
Our work stands on software other people wrote and gave away. Publishing ours is the least we can do to keep that bargain.
Not only our own code
When we hit a bug or a missing feature in a library we use, we report it to the people who maintain it — and where we can, we send the fix rather than keeping a patched copy. Over the years that has happened across a good number of other people’s projects, from .NET libraries to system tools. The oldest of these is pgAdmin, the PostgreSQL administration tool: Corsinvest’s founder is still listed among the members of its development team.
And how we make a living
The code is free, the time is not. We earn from support, design, training and contract development — not from selling licences. That is why we can afford to give the tools away: they are not the product, they are how we work.
